Jim Wren comes to The Carlson Law Firm as Of Counsel through his work at White, Carlson, Wren & Cook. His distinguished career encompasses roles as an esteemed educator of trial advocacy and an expert practitioner of trial advocacy. His presence significantly enhances The Carlson Law Firm’s approach to complex legal matters.

Jim has trained thousands of attorneys across the country in trial law.
Wren will continue as the Director of Practice Court and the Leon Jaworski Chair of Practice and Procedure at Baylor Law until he transitions from the full-time faculty during the 2024-25 academic year.
A proud alumnus of Baylor Law, Wren graduated cum laude with a J.D. in 1980 and furthered his education with an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1982.
With a deep array of civil jury trials spanning several decades and continuing throughout his teaching career, Jim brings extensive civil litigation expertise. He served as national president of the National Board of Trial Advocacy from 2009 through 2011 and continues to serve on the NBTA national board of directors executive committee. He is the current president of American Board of Trial Advocates Waco chapter. He co-authors multiple books in litigation including Proving Damages to the Jury (with Laura Brown), Texas Commercial Causes of Action (with Liz Fraley) and Texas Trial Procedure & Evidence (with Jeremy Counseller).
Certifications and Honors
Jim is board-certified in Civil Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and in both Civil Trial Law and Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. His dedication to legal education and mentorship was honored with the Baylor Outstanding Professor award in 2012, the Mentor of the Year award by the Waco-McLennan County Young Lawyers in 2016, and the ABOTA Ethics & Civility Award by the Waco ABOTA chapter in 2022.

In his practice, Jim is known for his advocacy style, which is both respectful and relentlessly persistent, and his skill in cross-examination is especially noteworthy. He is licensed for federal practice before the United States Supreme Court and multiple federal courts, and he continues to represent clients nationwide with unwavering dedication.
Involvement in the Legal Community
Jim’s influence extends beyond the courtroom and classroom. In addition to his continued work with NBTA and ABOTA, he is a Master of the Bench in the Judge Abner V. McCall American Inn of Court, a Fellow of both the American Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation, and a member of the National Trial Lawyers Top 100.
