News of the tragedy at the 2021 Astroworld festival spread across social media as family members desperately reached out to loved ones in attendance at the Travis Scott event to confirm if they were safe. 

According to reports, at least eight people were confirmed dead and hundreds more were injured in a crowd surge toward the stage during Scott’s set on Friday night. Mass Casualty Incident: People were being squeezed to death during Scott’s set

Reports indicate that people described feeling squeezed in the minutes leading up to Scott taking the stage. Witnesses also state that onlookers observed people being crushed and screaming in terror once Scott took the stage.

“The crowd was squishing me so much that I felt like I couldn’t breathe,” Emily Munguia, 22, told CNN. “I started screaming for help … I felt so scared, like I was going to die.”

“The amount of people I saw get hurt, passed out, bleeding, crying is crazy,” Munguia continued

Other reports mention people who passed out being crowd-surfed to security guards and medics who were on scene.

Astroworld Lawsuit: What went wrong at the 2021 Astroworld Festival

In what has been described as increasingly unruly behavior that culminated around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, November 5, the 2021 Astroworld Festival teetered on the brink for most of the day. Witnesses say the festival began with mobbing entrance gates and merch booths early in the day. The show came to an early close at 10:10 p.m. once it became clear that people were dying. In its aftermath, 25 people were taken to Houston-area hospitals by ambulance, some of them in cardiac arrest. At least 13 Astroworld Festival goers were still hospitalized on Saturday, five under the age of 18. 

Authorities are still investigating what went wrong at the 2021 Astroworld Festival. They are continuing to watch videos, interview witnesses and review concert protocols to determine how eight people died at the music festival. According to reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Live Nation Worldwide and Live Nation Entertainment were cited and fined for 10 violations spanning from 2016 to 2019.
