Efforts from the Texas Department of Transportation to prevent distracted driving in San Antonio

In an effort to prevent distracted driving, the Texas Department of Transportation used a virtual simulator game located at Ingram Park Mall back in June 2021. The simulator was used to demonstrate how early an accident can happen when you’re distracted for even a second, making an effort to show San Antonio residents the importance of paying attention when driving.

Are there regulations to prevent distracted driving in San Antonio?

Back in 2016, the city released a new campaign of the hands-free ordinance. Although texting while driving has been illegal in San Antonio since 2010, this law prohibits any use of a hand-held mobile device while a vehicle is in motion, with exceptions to emergencies.

Drivers can talk on their speakerphone as long as they aren’t holding the cell phone, but they can’t talk, listen, dial to a call or use the Internet while holding the device unless the vehicle is parked. This includes not picking up your phone at a stoplight or when you are stuck in a traffic jam. If found doing this, drivers can face a fine of up to $200.

What are the laws for distracted driving in Texas?

A first offense is punishable by a fine of up to $99, with any subsequent offense carrying a fine up to $200.

For drivers under the age of 18, Texas law already bans all cell phone use while driving, including hands-free, except in the case of emergencies. Additionally, drivers are banned from texting and using hand-held cellular devices while driving in school zones. School bus operators are prohibited from using cell phones while driving if children are present.
