What is the cause of the Dixie Fire?

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) admits that its equipment may be to blame for igniting the Dixie Fire.

According to the company, on July 13, 2021, at 7 a.m., PG&E’s outage system that the Cresta Dam area off of Highway 70 in the Feather Canyon lost power. A responding employee observed from a distance what he thought was a blown fuse, however, because of the “challenging terrain and road work resulting in a bridge closure” the employee was unable to reach the fuse until almost 5 p.m. that afternoon. While there, the employee observed three blown fuses and noticed a fire on the ground near the base of a nearby tree.

Judge Orders PG&E to explain role in Dixie Fire

On Aug. 6, a Northern California Federal Judge Ordered Pacific Gas & Electric to explain the utility company’s role in starting the Dixie Fire. While the cause of the blaze remains under investigation, U.S. District Judge William Alsup asked PG&E to give information regarding the tree that fell on the utility company’s power line at the origin of the Dixie Fire.

What California Counties is the Dixie Fire burning in?

As the Dixie Fire continues to swell, tens of thousands of structures are under the threat in the following counties:

  • Plumas
  • Butte
  • Lassen
  • Tehama

The Dixie Fire has continued to rage for 25 days. According to Cal Fire, the Dixie Fire increased in activity on Sunday amid hot, dry and windy conditions.

Can I file a lawsuit against PG&E for the Dixie Fire?

You may be able to file a lawsuit against PG&E for property lost or injuries sustained as a result of the fire. Because PG&E has admitted to responsibility in its preliminary investigation, people and business owners should seek legal counsel as soon as possible. A wildfire lawyer will be able to advise you on your next steps in a potential lawsuit against the company.

While the investigation is still in the early stages, those who have lost property or suffered injuries may be able to pursue a lawsuit against the company.

What sort of compensation is available through a Dixie Fire Lawsuit?

Dixie Fire victims will be able to pursue payment for the following losses:

  • Lost wages
  • Loss of crops
  • Personal injury
  • Wrongful death
  • Business losses
  • Evacuation costs
  • Emotional distress
  • Harm to pets or livestock
  • Depreciation in the value of your land
  • Damage to trees, timber, or underwood
  • The loss of use and enjoyment of your property
  • The cost to repair or replace your home and personal property

If PG&E is found responsible for causing the fire, you may be entitled to damages that your insurance won’t cover.

What if I don’t have insurance or enough insurance to cover the costs of the Dixie Fire damage?

In addition to FEMA resources, filing a lawsuit against the responsible can help you recoup some of the costs associated with the Dixie Fire. For example, in many cases, the insurance you carry on your home won’t cover landscaping, natural vegetation or compensation related to your evacuation. However, the law carves out a way to cover this by allowing you to file a lawsuit against responsible parties.
