Fisher-Price is reminding its consumers of the recall done in 2019 over the Rock ‘n Play sleepers, which continues to lead to infant deaths. The company, alongside the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC), re-announced the recall of 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play sleepers. The tragic infant deaths have prompted hundreds of families to file Rock ‘n Play Sleeper Lawsuits against the company.
According to the CPSC, 12 children were reported to have died in the recalled products. Fisher-Price announced the recall to remind and reach as many consumers as possible. Both companies are offering refunds to those who have one of the recalled items.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that caregivers place babies to sleep on a firm, flat surface. An inclined sleeper can cause young children to suffocate accidentally. Approximately, the total number of reported fatalities for Fisher-Price’s Rock ‘n Play sleepers is 100.
In 2021, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform released a report that found Fisher-Price downplayed safety concerns over their Rock ‘n Play Sleeper and was aware of the 14 deaths tied to the sleeper a year before making the recall. President Biden signed a law in May 2022 that bans certain inclined sleep products, and the CPSC will require all new products sold for infant sleep to meet safety standards.
Company officials stated they never prioritized profits over safety.
CPSC indicated that the consumer should stop using the Rock ‘n Play immediately. In addition, consumers may contact Fisher-Price for a refund or voucher.
This is a reminder to all consumers that recalled products don’t immediately disappear from use. Companies and federal regulators have to disperse their message to consumers. Then it is up to the consumers to take action.
Nancy Cowles, executive director of the nonprofit group Kids in Danger, recognized that it may be difficult for parents to stay on top of recalls. In addition, there is the reality that some of these recalled items may still be available to purchase in places such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and other third-seller sites, especially if the original owner only used items for a short period of time.
