Ford agrees to $299 million U.S. Takata Airbag Settlement

Court documents reveal that the Ford Motor Company agreed to an economic loss settlement of $299.1 million for the defective Takata airbag. Ford’s settlement agreement covers at least 6 million U.S. vehicles with potential faulty Takata airbag inflators.

The Ford settlement covers several forms of economic damages linked to the inflators. This includes claims that vehicles were inaccurately represented as safe. However, it also points out the fact that buyers overpaid for cars with defective or substandard airbags. Many of these buyers faced additional out of pocket costs to deal with recalls.

Ford joins six other automakers who previously agreed to similar settlements worth a combined total of over $1.2 billion. Those automakers include Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corp; Nissan Motor Co; Mazda Motor Corp, Subaru Corp and BMW AG.

Reports link at least 23 deaths and hundreds of injuries worldwide to the faulty Takata airbag inflators. Defective airbags launched pieces of scrap metal at drivers or passengers in the cabin of a vehicle. The defect comes from a cheap propellant inside of the inflators that degrade over time.

The settlement also covers out-of-pocket expenses including lost wages and childcare costs that Ford owners may incur when getting vehicles repaired. In addition, Ford will provide free rental or loaner vehicles to owners of recalled vehicles who have to wait on repairs when parts of are unavailable.

To date, there are more than 30 million unrepaired U.S. vehicles with defective Takata airbags.

A federal judge must still approve the Ford-Takata settlement.
