A temporary loss of power steering is prompting General Motors Company to recall 1.205 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. The automaker received reports of 30 crashes and two injuries, but no deaths have linked to the power steering recall.
The recall covers certain 2015 Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac pickup trucks and SUVs. More than 1 million of the vehicles included in the recall are in the U.S. GM’s most popular vehicle, the Silverado, makes up about 44 percent of the recalled vehicles. Although the power steering recall covers over a million vehicles, GM estimates that only about 2 percent of the units have the defect.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicle owners may experience difficulty steering—particularly at low speeds—increasing the chances of a crash.
In a regulatory document for the NHTSA, GM admitted that “the loss and sudden return of EPS assist typically happens within a one-second period and is caused by an electrical or software issue.”
The automaker launched a safety investigation into the matter on June 28. After analyzing customer complaints, conducting tests and completing engineering analysis, the automaker decided on Aug. 30 to initiate a recall.
GM will notify customers if their vehicles are affected. Additionally, GM dealers will update the power steering module software, free of charge.
The automaker recalled nearly 800,000 pickup trucks worldwide because of the same problem in 2017.
