Ground Beef Recall Issued After E. Coli Outbreak Sickens 18, Kills 1

A Colorado-based meat factory has recalled near 133,000 pounds of ground beef due to a possible E.coli contamination. The ground beef recall is linked to at least one death and 18 people getting sick.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports illnesses in Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts and Tennessee. People began experiencing symptoms between July 5 and 25.

Cargill Meat Solution distributed and produced the meat on June 21. Stores sold the product in 3-, 10- and 20-pound  packages in several chain stores across the United States. The USDA inspection mark on the package says “EST. 86R”.

On Sept. 26, the USDA released a list of retail locations and states who may have received the tainted beef. The following stores may have received affected ground beef products:

  • Target: Nationwide
  • Sam’s Club: Nationwide
  • Safeway/Albertson’s: Nationwide
  • Aldi: Stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
  • Meijer: Nationwide
  • Pak N Save: Stores in California
  • Vons: Stores in California
  • FoodMaxx: Stores in California

Cargill Meat Solution issued a recall of ground meat product in August for products sold at Publix locations. At the time, the company reported E. coli illnesses, but no deaths.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service “is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.” The USDA is telling consumers to throw away or return the products to the place of purchase.

Symptoms of E. coli begin between one and 10 days after consuming contaminated food or drink. However, the CDC reports that most people become sick three to four days after exposure.
