Bad Clutches Prompt Harley-Davidson to Recall 178,000 Bikes

Another Harley-Davidson recall is affecting nearly 178,000 motorcycles from around the U.S. The recall stems from a clutch problem causing bikes to get stuck in gear which can lead to riders losing control of their bikes and crashing.

Documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that the clutches were internally leaking fluids, causing them to disengage from the gears.

The company says that it has reports of five crashes, however, no injuries have been reported. Models affected by the recall include the following 2017 and 2018 motorcycles:

  • Police Road King, Road King, Road King Special
  • Electra Glide Ultra Classic
  • Ultra Limited, Ultra Limited Low, Ultra Limited Shrine
  • Police Electra Glide
  • Street Glide, Street Glide Special
  • Road Glide Ultra, Road Glide, Road Glide Special
  • Street Glide, Street Glide Special
  • Road Glide Ultra, Road Glide, Road Glide Special
  • Freewheeler
  • Tri Glide Ultra
  • CVO Limited, CVO Glide

The recall also covers the 2017 Softail Slim S, Fat Boy S, CVO Pro Street Breakout and the 2018 115th Anniversary Ultra Limited, 115 Anniversary Street Glide, 115th Anniversary Street Glide Special, 115th Anniversary Tri Glide Ultra, 115th Anniversary CVO Limited, and CVO Road Glide.

This Harley-Davidson recall is expected to begin on Nov. 5 and is Harley’s fifth recall in five years. Harley dealers will address the problem by installing a new secondary clutch actuator piston assembly for riders. In addition, dealers will repair the issue at no cost.

The announcement comes just one week after the company said it was recalling 238,380 motorcycles worldwide due to a clutch problem.
