Nissan is joining the list of automakers recalling vehicles for ignition switch issues. The company recalled 166,000 vehicles in North America, with 153,000 of those in the United States and 13,000 in Canada. The Nissan ignition switch recall affects models from 2017 and 2018.
The Nissan ignition switch recall only affects vehicles sold with a traditional key-in-switch ignition. Push to start vehicles are not included in the recall. The issues are very similar to those in GM’s faulty ignition switches. Over time, components inside the ignition switch can wear, causing “reduced durability.” When combined with excessive vibrations in a vehicle, the spring causes the key to move from the “ON” position to the accessory or “ACC” position while driving.
Faulty switches can lead to a loss of engine power, power steering, anti-lock braking and improper deployment of airbags.
The company is currently unaware of any of deaths or injuries related to the defective part. However, a Nissan spokeswoman said the automaker “is taking this voluntary action in an abundance of caution.”
The recall affects 2017-2018 Juke, Frontier, Sentra, Versa, Versa Note, NV, NV200 and taxi cab models in the U.S. In Canada; the recall affects the 2017-2018 Frontier, Micra and Versa Note models and 2017 Sentra, NV200, NV1500. NV2500 and NV3500 models.
Nissan plans to inform owners about the recall this month. Owners of the affected vehicles will be able to have the issue repaired at a dealership for free.
As evidenced by GM’s faulty ignition switches, keys switching from the ON to ACC or OFF position is a very serious concern. The amount of cars affected by Nissan’s recall is relatively small when compared to GM’s 3 million recalled vehicles.
