6 Non-Toxic Kids Cosmetics to Give this Holiday Season

A gift as old as time is giving young girls makeup. Not as a way to enhance their self-esteem, but as a way to get them to leave mom or grandma’s makeup palettes alone. While many of us learned to apply makeup by sneaking into our mother’s makeup, the rise of beauty vloggers and influencers, has forever changed the landscape of makeup being an “adults” only product. When purchasing products, remember to check the label for non-toxic ingredients on kids’ cosmetics.

While makeup has its critics, as a toy the product encourages imagination and creativity. It can make a great gift—particularly if your child enjoys playing with your more expensive palettes. With the ubiquity of YouTube, a lot of children enjoy playing with makeup—further cementing child makeup kits as a great gift idea during the holiday season. Because of growing litigation related to talc-based baby powder and the chances of developing conditions such as mesothelioma, it is important that you check the labels of any gifts you purchase for young people in your life.

Some adult makeup products contain toxic chemicals, but kids are more susceptible to exposure to toxic chemicals from makeup products than adults. Because they are still developing both physically and mentally, children are particularly vulnerable to toxic chemicals.

Exposure to toxic substances can affect anything from the natural development of your child to their internal organs. Children are most likely to accidentally ingest toxic chemicals by forgetting to wash their hands and put their hands in their mouth or may inhale fumes more. Children’s lungs are particularly vulnerable because of their small size.

Are there toxic chemicals in cosmetics marketed to children?

According to a study from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, cosmetic products marketed toward children often contain hidden toxic substances such as metals and volatile organic compounds such as:

  • Styrene
  • Ethylebenzene
  • Toluene
  • Vinyl acetate

The makeup kits or nail products in the study were purchased from Target, Toys R Us, and Dollar General. This list didn’t exclude name brands including Disney, Minions, and Hershey’s.

In addition, products such as nail polish, nail polish remover, certain face paints or glues may contain acetone. Acetone levels 2 to 3 mL are considered toxic to children.

6 Non-Toxic Kids Cosmetics Gift Options
