What kind of injuries can occur with a pressure cooker explosion?

Most often injuries that occur from pressure cooker explosions are burns from the hot contents of the cooker. In most cases, the following types of injuries occur:

  • Burns to the face, chest and torso
  • Disfigurement
  • Eye injuries such as blindness or vision loss
  • Electrocution

The above injuries can lead to costly treatments and hospitalizations. If you or a loved one were injured call our law office today for more information about a possible settlement or lawsuit for your pressure cooker injuries.

Can my pressure cooker explode?

Because of how these devices cook the contents placed inside, they are inherently prone to explosions. These dangers increase exponentially if the manufacturers fail to give adequate instructions on how to use the device or if there is a defective design. If your pressure cooker is on the list of recalled pressure cookers, cease use immediately.

If you’ve suffered injuries from a pressure cooker explosion, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills and other damages. Our team of mass torts lawyers are ready to help.

What are the possible defects and problems of pressure cookers?

Frequently, manufacturing defects and design are the cause of pressure cooker explosions. These defects can manifest as the following:

  • Inadequate lid seals. When a lid is defective it may not properly seal. This can result in extremely hot contents spilling or the expulsion of contents.
  • Faulty gaskets that allow premature opening. A faulty gasket that allows the premature opening of the pot during high pressure can cause steam and contact burns.
  • Poor venting. If the pot does not have adequate venting, it can lead to a pressure cooker explosion which can shoot shrapnel and hot contents.

In each of these situations, a defective design may be at fault for any injuries sustained. When companies cut corners, it’s important for consumers to hold them accountable.

Have Instant Pots exploded?

Over the last couple of years, Instant Pots have gained a cult-like following. Instant Pots offer a modern convenience for busy people to have a hot, home-cooked meal when they return home after a long day. It also cooks really fast and has several settings that allow users to cook meals in different ways.

There were 104,000 Instant Pots sold exclusively by Walmart that were recalled in 2018. The particular unit was the Instant Pot Gem 65 8-in-1- Multicookers. The products were recalled after at least 107 reports of overheating and five incidents that led to property damage.

The recalled batch codes include the following 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734 and 1746. You can find out if your device was part of the recall by checking the rating label on the underside of the device.

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits in the news

In July 2021, a Pennsylvania mom sued Instant Pot and Target after an explosion burned her two-year-old child. According to her complaint, the plaintiff was making soup in her Instant Pot and used the product according to its instructions. After her 60-minute timer expired, she noticed an error message on the screen that read “burn.” She released the pressure valve and once she believed the pot was no longer pressurized, she removed the lid. The lid shot open, spewing the scalding hot content into her kitchen and made contact with her young child—who was sitting nearby in a chair. She called 911 and paramedics took her daughter to the hospital where she was treated for third-degree burns to her face, neck, chest, left shoulder and left arm.
