On July 10, a San Francisco judge allowed hundreds of Roundup lawsuits to proceed to trial. The lawsuit alleges that the weed killer is responsible for causing cancer in those who worked with the chemical. At the center of the Roundup lawsuit active chemical glyphosate. Cancer victims and families of victims say Monsanto knew about the ingredient’s risks but failed to warn buyers.
Although U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria noted that there is “rather weak” evidence that glyphosate causes cancer, he also noted that opinions of three experts linking the ingredient to non-Hodgkins lymphoma were not “junk science.”
Monsanto Vice President Scott Partridge denies any connection between his company’s top-selling weed killer and cancer. Non-Hodgkins lymphoma is a type of cancer that starts in lymphocytes cells. The cells are part of the body’s immune systems and affect the lymph nodes and other lymphoid tissues such as the spleen and bone marrow.
In 2016, Monsanto sued the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment for adding glyphosate to a list of cancer-causing chemicals. The giant agrochemical company eventually lost in court but appealed.
While the World Health Organization classifies glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic”, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has gone back and forth since the 1980s of how to classify the chemical. Last year, the EPA concluded the glyphosate is likely not a carcinogen.
