An additional 30 people across 19 states have reported getting sick after eating salmonella-tainted Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal. This brings the total number of salmonella Honey Smacks cases to 130 and the number of states affected by the outbreak to 36.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory in July telling people not to eat the cereal after several reports of salmonella related to the cereal. In last week’s CDC update, the agency recommended that customers not buy or eat the cereal regardless of size or “best if used by” dates. Additionally, it told retailers not to sell and discard all Honey Smacks products.
The growing number of salmonella Honey Smacks cases prompted the CDC to issue reminder to consumers not to eat the cereal on Sept. 4. Of the 130 cases, 34 have been serious enough for hospitalization.
Eating cereal contaminated with salmonella can cause serious illness—including fatal infections. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The infection is particularly dangers in young children, pregnant women and seniors. Healthy people typically recover within four to seven days with proper treatment.
Since May 2018, the FDA along with the CDC learned about a cluster of salmonella outbreaks in multiple states. Reports of salmonella Honey Smacks cereal date back to March 2018. The outbreak has affected everyone from children less than a year old to those as old as 95. No deaths have been reported.
The recall affects stores carrying the product both domestically and internationally.
