Thousands of people who work in landscaping, farming, nurseries, and those repeatedly exposed to Roundup may soon see an end to their lawsuit with Bayer-Monsanto. The company hired a high profile attorney that could signal a plan to resolve thousands of lawsuits linked to the popular weed killer, Roundup.
The move comes amidst a bevy of disgruntled Bayer investors rebuking the company’s management at its annual shareholder meeting in April. In fact, investor unrest has dogged the company since its 2018 takeover of Monsanto. The unrest among shareholders has continued to grow, particularly after a string of U.S. lawsuits led to significant jury verdicts.
According to Bloomberg Intelligence, settling the remaining cases could cost the company anywhere from $6 to $10 billion. From the standpoint of the investors, that’s a price worth paying if it restores Bayer’s market value.
Experts say that a Roundup settlement could generate $34 billion in value for the company.
As noted above, thousands of people who have worked with Roundup or were exposed in other ways are at an increased risk of developing cancer. There has been significant evidence linking glyphosate to the following cancers:
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- B-cell lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
Investors are uncertain of the future of Bayer-Monsanto for two reasons:
- Continuing to fight the lawsuits could lead to more costly legal defeats.
- There is difficulty gauging the future sales of Roundup and other agricultural herbicides based on the chemical glyphosate.
A new legal team is likely to put forth new arguments and experts in front of jurors. However, they will also consider both the dim view many jurors have of Monsanto, as well as the heavy punitive damages being awarded. Additionally, they will also need to consider the arduous process of appealing and costs for the company. It’s likely the company will move forward with mediation to settle the more than 13,000 lawsuits filed against the company.
At this point, you don’t need to do anything. The company has yet to come out with the news that they will settle and as a result, we remain in the dark of what Bayer-Monsanto’s next moves are. Should anything change, a legal representative will be in touch with you discuss how your case will move forward.
Bayer-Monsanto’s moves signal that it is possible the company is moving toward Roundup settlements.
