On Wednesday, August 14, a tragic car crash took place about six miles north of Lampasas on U.S. Highway 281. All five passengers were confirmed deceased on the scene.

The devastating accident occurred early Wednesday morning as 31-year-old Jacinto Gudino Duran was traveling southbound on US 281 in Lampasas County at milepost 406 in a 2004 Cadillac. At the same time, a 2024 Kia Telluride, driven by 45-year-old Mani Arvind, was traveling northbound on US 281.

Evidence on the scene showed that the right rear tire of the Cadillac had a blowout, causing the Cadillac to lose control and enter into the path of the Kia. The Kia then hit the passenger side of the Cadillac, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, according to DPS Sgt. Bryan Washko.

The Cadillac contained Duran, the driver, and a 23-year-old female passenger who was not identified. The Kia, operated by Arvind, also held two passengers, 40-year-old Pradeepa Arvind and 17-year-old Andril Arvind.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

Defective Tires Can Lead to Car Crashes

Thousands of people are tragically injured or lose their lives in car crashes every year because of defective auto parts. Seatbelt failure, faulty brakes, defective tires, malfunctioning airbags, and more can lead to devastating consequences when they fail to properly perform their function: keeping you safe.

Tire failures or blowouts have been a major contributor to car crashes in recent years due to defective tires. In fact, some of the largest tire manufacturers have been shown to produce tires that are unsuitable for use, especially at highway speeds. Poor tread design often leads to tread separation which then results in rollovers, spinouts, and other tragic crashes.
