Zantac Recall: What Kind of Cancer Does Zantac Cause?

In April 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced it was requesting manufacturers to withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) ranitidine drugs, including Zantac, from the market immediately. The recall was the agencyā€™s final step in its investigation of finding a potential carcinogen, NDMA, in Zantac.

NDMA impurities have plagued several medications over the past two years. In April, Zantac, and its active ingredient ranitidine, became the next drugs to get pulled from shelves at the request of the FDA.Ā

What Kind of Cancer Does Zantac Cause?

Thousands of people have taken ranitidine products for years to address heartburn and other stomach conditions. Unfortunately, sustained exposure to NDMA increases the risk of developing cancer. The Carlson Law Firm is representing clients who have suffered the following types of cancer after taking Zantac:Ā

  • Liver Cancer
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Intestinal Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Esophageal/Nasal/Throat Cancer
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer

Zantac was among the best-selling drugs in the world meaning potentially millions of people have been exposed to carcinogens through the drug. The drug was available as an over-the-counter medication, as well as a stronger version available by prescription. In its release, the FDA noted that the NDMA impurity in some products increases over time when the drug is stored at higher than room temperature.

What is NDMA?

NDMA (n-Nitrosodimethylamine) is a known probable human carcinogen. As mentioned above, over the last two years, more medications have been recalled as a result of potential NDMA contamination. The organic chemical forms in both industrial and natural processes. NDMA can often be found rocket fuel and several other chemicals.Ā

The clients we represent allege that drug manufacturers failed to notify them that the drug was tainted with N-Nitrosoimethylamine (NDMA), a potential human carcinogen.Ā
